The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences of the Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan, is committed to providing high-quality undergraduate and graduate education that bridges and integrates the disciplines of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Pharmacology. Additionally, the Department is dedicated to undertaking significant scientific and translational research that will benefit the health and well-being of the broader community.

The Department's teaching, learning, and research facilities include a state-of-the-art Anatomy and Surgical Learning Studio and more than 8,000 square feet of multidisciplinary and microscopy laboratory space. These facilities are well-equipped for instruction, training, and academic research.

The Aga Khan University welcomes applications for a Professor of Anatomy post in the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for actively engaging in and contributing to the Department's and University's undergraduate medical (MBBS), M Phil, and PhD programs, supervising and mentoring M Phil and PhD students, conceptualizing and conducting research, and mentoring younger faculty members.

Among the critical duties are the following:

1. Consistently outstanding teaching throughout academic programs, with a particular emphasis on:

  • instructing medical students in anatomy and offering specialized anatomy courses at graduate programs
  • using evidence-based educational methods, such as small group instruction, lectures, gross and microscopic laboratory sessions, tutorials, practical sessions, and problem-based learning, as necessary.
  • Using technology (such as Body) and other ASLS elements into the teaching of Anatomy
  • supervisory authority over graduate students (M Phil and PhD)

2. Assume leadership responsibilities within the discipline and department by:

3. Curricula conception, development, and administration at all programmatic levels

4. Mentoring and role modelling for younger faculty members via high-quality educational and research contributions

5. Pursue grant-funded research in close cooperation with academic colleagues both within the department and across the university, as well as via foreign partnerships.

6. Contribute significantly to the department's direction, strategy, goals, and outcomes through serving on departmental and institutional committees and taskforces, and will be expected to represent the department globally.

Requirements

  • The successful applicant will exhibit the following characteristics consistent with their years of experience:
  • Capacity to teach at a high level at all curricular levels
  • Capacity to mentor graduate students
  • Capability of writing grants and obtaining extramural financing
  • Scholarship in a specified area of emphasis as shown by peer-reviewed high-quality publications, high-quality at the national and worldwide level, for a change in practice or policy, and/or other kinds of dissemination.

Academic Standards

  • Candidates should possess a PhD or an equivalent degree in Anatomy (e.g., FCPS).
  • Preference will be given to those with a medical degree and post-doctoral fellowship experience.

Skills

  • In-depth understanding of anatomy and the capacity to teach and train medical, M Phil, and PhD students, as well as contribute to the Department's and University's other academic programs
  • Excellent communication abilities, both written and vocal
  • Competencies in leadership and mentoring.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in teaching, learning, and evaluation across programming levels, with a special emphasis on clinical education and the use of evidence-based pedagogical methods.
  • Extensive experience developing, implementing, and managing courses or curricula
  • Supervisory experience with graduate students
  • Demonstration of scholarly and scientific activity in a relevant area
  • Extensive experience in securing independent research funding and executing research projects
  • Mentorship experience.
